Writing and formatting
Papeer is a Markdown editor, but you don’t need to know Markdown. You write as anywhere else and format with the toolbar, the slash or shortcuts. Under the hood every document is a plain .md file you can take with you any time.
The formatting toolbar
Above the text there is a fixed toolbar: block style (paragraph, headings), bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, highlight, colour, bullet list, numbered list, tasks, link, image, attachment, table, quote, code block, divider, undo and redo. On a narrow screen the rest hides under ….

The slash
Type / at the start of a line and pick from the menu: Heading 1–3, Bullet list, Numbered list, Tasks, Quote, Code, Divider, Table, Image, Attachment, Link to document. Just keep typing and the menu narrows down.
Markdown, if you know it
Typing it directly works too: # Heading, - bullet, 1. number, - [ ] task, **bold**, *italic*, `code`, > quote, --- divider, | table |. Highlight is ==like this==.
Highlights and colours
Highlights and colours for text and background are in the toolbar. Papeer has a fixed palette of six text colours and six background colours, so documents look consistent and stay readable outside Papeer too.
Tables
Insert a table from the toolbar or with the slash (3×3 with a header). Tapping into a cell shows options to add or remove a row and column. Inside a cell, Shift+Enter makes a new line.
Tasks
A task list has checkboxes. A ticked task stays in the list — handy for an overview of what’s already done. Shift+Enter makes a second line in a task.
Links
- Link to a website: select text and tap Link in the toolbar (or
Ctrl+Kin the text). While reading, a tap opens the link; while writing, a tap only places the cursor and you open the link with the Open button in the toolbar.Ctrl+ click always opens it. - Link to another document in Papeer: with the slash Link to document, or with the Document… button in the link field. When you rename or move the document, the links fix themselves.
Locked document
A document written elsewhere (say in another editor) that Papeer would have to rewrite differently when saving opens read-only with an Edit frame. Tap it to unlock — Papeer then saves it in its own notation. The text doesn’t change, only the Markdown notation.
Shortcuts
? shows an overview of keyboard shortcuts (outside writing). The most common: Ctrl+K search and commands, N new document, Ctrl+, Settings, Ctrl+\ hide the sidebar. More in the article Search and shortcuts.
